Maria Fernanda Garcia Velazco is currently serving as Cultural Attaché at the Embassy of Uruguay in the United States. She has been a member of the Uruguayan Foreign Service since 2007.
Prior to being posted in Washington, DC, she served as Director of Consular Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay, where she oversaw the Center for citizen services and collaborated in the assistance of Uruguayan nationals abroad.
In her previous assignment, she served as Cultural Attaché in the Embassy of Uruguay in France. A short time after her arrival, she was also named Consul of Uruguay in Paris, a position she held for almost three years. During the last half of her term in France she served as the Deputy Chief of Mission.
Counselor Garcia has worked in different areas of the Uruguayan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including the Directorate of Protocol and State Ceremonial, the Secretariat of the Vice Minister, the Office of the Secretary-General, the General Directorate for Political Affairs, and the Directorate of Multilateral Affairs.
Before entering the Uruguayan Foreign Service, Maria Fernanda worked as an English teacher. She has also worked in administration for an import company, in the financial sector, and in customer service.
Maria Fernanda holds a Degree in International Relations from the -“Universidad de la República” in Montevideo, Uruguay. From 2007 to 2009 and from 2016 to 2017, she studied in the Uruguayan Diplomatic Academy, the “Instituto Artigas del Servicio Exterior”.
She is fluent in English, Spanish, and French. She also has a working knowledge of Portuguese.
